Sex positions that can help you sleep better

#sex and sleep

There is often a link between our sex lives and how we sleep and with Valentine's Day around the corner, it's a great time to think about our sex lives. During this month, many of us will be having more sex as we go on dates and explore our connections. After all, sharing a bed with a partner to sleep is one of the best ways we can bond with them. But could there be a direct link between sex positions and better sleep? Here at Sunrise, we took steps in researching this question so you could find some must-try sex positions to help you and your partner sleep somewhat better.

The importance of sex for good sleep

As part of our survey which explored the link between sex positions and sleep, we asked 250 people about their sex frequency and sleep satisfaction. We also assessed whether the chronotypes of different couples matched. Our chronotype is our bodies' natural inclination to sleep at a certain time and you can find out yours by taking part in our quiz.

From our research, we found that couples who share a sleep schedule have sex more frequently. It's not surprising that if a couple awakens their best together, it's likely they might have the same energy levels throughout the day. This will make them consider sex more and get more enjoyment from it.

More than half of the couples reported that their sleep improved when they tried to sleep straight after sex. If you’re looking to not only build your bond with your partner and improve your sleep quality, sex before bed may be a good idea for your night-time routine.

What the research says about different sex positions

If you want to get experimental on date night, it’s a great idea to think about trying out a new sex position. For example, you might not have heard of the lotus position or the bridge position. Trying out new positions can increase your bond with your partner as you explore new ways to have sex. It also seems to have the added benefit of being able to increase your sleep satisfaction.

When conducting our survey, we found that the youngest age group (18-24) reported their sleep satisfaction as high. They ranked the lotus position more highly than other age groups. Interestingly, the 24-35 age group had the second highest sleep satisfaction. They ranked the bridge, eagle, and cowgirl positions as their favourite sex positions. These positions are must-try sex positions when it comes to trying to improve your sleep.

Much like the people we surveyed for our research, you may find that getting a perfect night's sleep happens when you try out new positions but finding the right position for you and your partner is a process. After sex and before bedtime, remember to think about how you feel the next day and whether you noticed an improvement in your sleep quality after trying out a new position. Although certain positions may be linked to better sleep, each relationship is unique. It may take some experimentation to find a position that works for you and your partner.

The importance of a good mattress for sex and sleep

78% of participants in our study noted the importance of where they have sex and how it makes them feel about their satisfaction. The favourite place for couples to have sex was in their own beds with their own mattress. This shows the importance of having a good mattress not only for your sleep but also for your sex life.

This is why it’s so important to make sure that you have a mattress that suits both you and your partner. With Emma mattresses, you can get an assured 10 years of mattress quality with our warranty. When you make a commitment to a mattress, you can sleep soundly knowing you’ve made a commitment to better sleep and a better sex life.

Food that promotes better sleep

Now that we're into the swing of the new year, many of us may get used to different eating patterns as part of our New Year’s Resolutions, whether you took on veganuary or started the year on a diet to aid weight loss.  However, these diets can frequently emphasise restriction. While it can help you improve your balanced lifestyle, it's important to think positively about the changes you can make and maintain, including trying to include foods in your diet that are good for your sleep too.
